Steel production in Ukraine decreased by 57% in August 2026

In August 2026, the Ukrainian steel industry experienced a sharp decline in steel production volumes. During the reporting month, only 277 thousand tons of steel were produced, which is 57.3% less compared to the same period last year. This significant reduction indicates a deep crisis that has engulfed the sector.

Deepening crisis in metallurgy

According to operational information from the association “Ukrmetallurgprom”, the August results not only significantly lag behind last year’s data but also show a decline on a monthly basis. Compared to July of this year, steel production volumes fell by 39.4%. This negative trend indicates serious challenges faced by Ukrainian metallurgists.

Dynamics of pig iron production and market trends

Pig iron production also significantly decreased: in August, 257.1 thousand tons were produced, which is 65.6% less than in the same period last year. For the first eight months of 2026, the overall decline in steel production amounted to 12.5%.

Key factors affecting metallurgy:

  • Logistical difficulties
  • High cost of energy resources
  • Security risks due to martial law

“Restoring pre-war production volumes is currently impossible due to systemic obstacles faced by businesses under martial law.”

Despite the challenging conditions, industry enterprises are trying to adapt: optimizing costs, seeking alternative markets, and implementing new management solutions. However, without a stable energy system and effective logistics, the recovery of the metallurgy complex remains in question.

The decline in steel and pig iron production poses a serious challenge for Ukraine’s economy, as metallurgy traditionally remains one of the key export sectors of the country.
